
Most people assume glare is simply caused by “bright lights”. But night driving glare is more complicated than that. Two drivers can be on the same road, facing the same headlights, and experience completely different levels of discomfort.
For some, it’s mildly irritating. For others, it feels momentarily blinding.
The reason usually comes down to a combination of light, eye health, road conditions, and the way modern cars are built.
Your Pupils Are Working Harder
At night, your pupils naturally widen to let in more light. This helps you see in darker conditions, but it also makes your eyes more sensitive to sudden brightness.
When an approaching car appears with intense LED headlights, your eyes have to react quickly. The pupil contracts, then expands again once the car passes. During constant night driving, especially on busy roads, this process repeats over and over.
That constant adjustment creates fatigue. It’s one reason long night drives can feel strangely exhausting even when traffic is light.
Age also plays a part. As we get older, the eye becomes less efficient at handling rapid changes in brightness. Light scatters more easily inside the eye, which can make glare feel stronger and linger longer after a vehicle has passed.
Modern Headlights Are Different
Many drivers notice that glare feels worse now than it did years ago. They’re not imagining it.
Older halogen headlights produced a softer, warmer light. Modern LED and HID headlights are brighter, whiter, and more concentrated. They improve visibility for the driver using them, but they can feel extremely intense to oncoming traffic.
SUVs and larger vehicles add another issue. Their headlights sit higher off the ground, meaning the beam often lands directly in the eye line of drivers in smaller cars.
Even correctly aligned headlights can feel overwhelming under certain conditions.
Rain also amplifies the problem. Wet roads reflect light back upwards, creating a layer of scattered brightness that reduces contrast and clarity. Road markings, puddles, and reflective signs all contribute to visual overload.
Dirty Glass Makes Glare Worse
One of the biggest causes of glare is surprisingly mundane: dirty glass.
A windscreen covered in fine smears, dust, residue, or tiny scratches scatters incoming light across the surface. Instead of seeing a clean point of light, the brightness spreads outward into streaks and halos.
This is especially noticeable during winter when salt, condensation, and low sun leave residue on the glass.
The inside of the windscreen matters too. A thin film builds up gradually from ventilation systems, fingerprints, and airborne particles. Many people clean the outside regularly but rarely wipe the interior properly.
Glasses can create the same issue. Scratched lenses or dirty coatings increase light scatter significantly at night.
Astigmatism Often Plays a Role
Some people experience unusually strong glare because of an uncorrected vision issue called astigmatism.
Astigmatism slightly alters how light focuses inside the eye. Instead of producing a clean image, lights may appear stretched, streaked, or star-shaped, especially at night.
A lot of people don’t realise they have it until they begin struggling with night driving.
This is why glare shouldn’t automatically be dismissed as “normal”. If headlights suddenly seem harsher than they used to, or if night driving feels increasingly uncomfortable, it’s often worth having an eye test.
Even a small prescription change can noticeably improve clarity after dark.
Fatigue Changes the Way You See Light
Tired eyes process light differently.
After a long day staring at screens, driving at night can feel more difficult because the eyes are already strained before the journey even begins. Dryness also becomes more common in the evening, and dry eyes tend to scatter light more aggressively.
That combination can make headlights bloom outward or appear fuzzy around the edges.
People often notice this during motorway driving, where concentration remains fixed for long periods and blinking naturally reduces.
The Small Things That Help
There’s no way to eliminate glare entirely, but a few small adjustments usually make a noticeable difference.
Keeping windscreens genuinely clean helps more than most people expect. So does cleaning glasses properly rather than quickly wiping them on clothing.
Anti-reflective coatings on lenses can reduce internal reflections at night, particularly for prescription wearers.
